New Year… New You? Why Not?

Another year has come to a close. Everyone ponders on the prospect of setting New Years resolutions once more. You think about this… this is going to be your year! You’re going to set some resolutions, but then you think back to earlier years…

Like many people, you may have set New Year’s resolutions in previous years. To be more healthy, get fit, advance your career. The motivation is there for the first month, and then the novelty wears off. Your resolutions become a distant memory. This habitual practice sits at the back of your mind, and you think why would 2023 be any different?

Well, you may be right, but why should that stop you from making resolutions again?

At the start of a new year, there is this a sense of motivation, a desire to change, and be more positive. We should harness this desire. It’s not you or your resolutions that fail.

Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time we fail.

Confucius

Perhaps your goals were too big? Maybe the support you needed to achieve your goals wasn’t there, or maybe circumstances changed. The point is, we learn from failure and our experiences. This shouldn’t stop you from using the motivation of a new year stop you from achieving success.

Some quick tips in helping you design achievable goals:

  • Don’t set too many. Focus on maybe 2 or 3. Your aim this year is to be successful.

  • Your goals will be to achieve something by the end of the year, so think about how to break these up into smaller, more manageable milestones, that create stepping stones to your ultimate goals.

  • Identify where you need support, seek it out and ask for it.

  • Take action! I often talk about the Rule of 3 with clients: What are you going to do in the next 3 days, the next 3 weeks, the next 3 months? Focusing on these milestones and taking action provides stepping stones to greater things.

This can be your year for success in whatever you want to achieve. Be positive, believe in yourself, and learn from failure.

Wishing you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2023!
